CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif., October 2, 2020 – Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co., the industry’s largest manufacturer of refrigerated trailers and a leading manufacturer of dry freight vans, flatbeds, and Tautliner® curtainsided trailers is pleased to announce that its Glade Spring, Virginia manufacturing plant has received a Plant Safety Award from Liberty Mutual Insurance.
This is the 6th Safety Award that Glade Spring has received to date. Plant Manager, Sam Cassell stated, “I applaud the commitment our Glade Spring team has towards maintaining a safe work environment. As a manufacturing plant, we recognize the importance of safety and apply the necessary measures throughout the entire production process. We truly have the best and most hard-working team.”
Liberty Mutual’s Safety Award is based on the days away, restricted and transferred (DART) rate, which is calculated from the number of hours worked relative to the number of accidents that have occurred. Lower number of accidents result in lower DART rates.
In 2019, Utility’s Glade Spring plant had a DART rate of 1.28 with over 1.5 million worked hours. The average DART rate for the trailer manufacturing industry is higher at 4.3. A Silver Safety Award is presented for DART rates that are at least 40% lower than the industry average rate. The Glade Spring plant’s DART rate was less than 1/3 of the industry rate.
Due to COVID-19, the onsite presentation was canceled this year. In the past, Richard Williams of Liberty Mutual Insurance, Risk Control Services, has presented the Safety Award to the Glade Spring team.
